Thank you. From what I've seen so far, it looks like it's nice to see another conservative around. Looks like this forum leans more liberal, am I correct?

I have a bizarre hybrid of political stances. I don't think you're going to see me entirely stick to my political stance during your time here; I occasionally make references to a liberal outlook.

I would say we're mainly liberal here. I think that's down to the choices of who Borghunter has referred here, personally. None of us so far have ridiculously far-out opinions yet, so it will be interesting to see when someone introduces a spanner to the works later on. :)

Well I'm a Libertarian, so I'm pretty liberal on some things, like gay marriage and abortion. But when it comes to the economy and such, I'm very conservative. I'm a proponent of the FairTax too lol.

I would agree with you on the counts of gay marriage and abortion; there are special instances which require a degree of freedom of choice regardless of personal opinion. I think that is part of the reason for the hybrid I mentioned before.

I've not got a huge knowledge of FairTax. I am aware that it replaces the Federal Tax that you guys currently are exposed to, with a national sales tax of sorts. How would it benefit the average citizen?

Yea, it would replace the federal income tax with a national sales tax. It is "fair" because 1) it doesn't punish people for being successful; and 2) it taxes you on what you consume, not on what you make.

It benefits the average citizen a number of ways. For one, most people don't realize that the top 10% of our country is paying over 95% of the income tax. That includes people who are making around $100,000. People think the progressive tax only effects the extravagently rich, but it hurts people who should be considered "average". $100,000 can hardly be considered "excessively wealthy".

Wouldn't this generate less money from the people who prefer to save rather than spend though? I don't advocate extortionate taxes, but then again, they DO have a purpose in that they fund the civil sectors.

I'd think that any incentive to save money is a good thing.

Welcome friend!

Generally it's impossible to class people nowadays as classical Conservatism has been replaced (quite rightly in my opinion) by a right-wing Libertarian politics.

Personally speaking, i am fanatically right-wing on issues such as social security, the welfare state and education whereas somewhat Liberal on issues such as gay marriage etc

It seems that this type of conservatism is becoming quite popular among the younger generation (my own). A bunch of my friends who are very conservative on some issues are liberal in the areas of gay marriage, etc.

Strange type of liberalism is becoming quite popular among the younger generation (MY own). Even the most traditionally liberal of parties have become right wing. For example the adoption of the traditionally Conservative Free Market Economic system among New Labour in the UK and the Democrats in the U.S.

The most important aspects of both sides of the political spectrum are being forgotten.
