He's a decent politician alongside mediocre ones.

Doesn't mean he'll do any good, in the long run. A president can't bring about the vaunted "change" within the current system.

Obama? Having clinched the nomination, he's begun pandering to a wider base of voters by shifting paradigm on a host of issues that he had previously expressed a liberal bent for. He ain't much more than the archetypal politician, and while he might "unite" America, he won't remediate its ills.
