Yesterday (June 11, 2008), Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a formal apology to the victims of residential schools.

This was definitely a needed apology, it was definitely well thought. However, there is much more to be done.

Methinks it would probably work out better if we attempted to properly educate them, that they could be productive in society, and less poor.

There seems to be a general assumption that an apology is all required.
I read quite an interesting contribution to The Globe and Mail in the form of a letter to the editor today; the author opined that the belief that those having attended the residential schools will readily accept a simply apology as sufficient are continuing in the assimilative state of mind that was first exhibited by the residential schools themselves.
