Have you ever thought about this? If there were no medical breakthroughs or cures, where would we be today?
Natural selection theorizes that people that have cancer and any other illness should be left to die so that the rest would proper and adapt to be immune to illness. Forgetting all moral aspects (letting the person to die), what is your view on Natural selection?

Social welfare is dulling the effect of natural selection.

But the amazing thing about mankind is it's using technology to beat nature. It could take millions of years to evolve away from certain conditions, mankind may beat natural selection using brain power, which is paradoxically natural selection in action.
