I'm posting this here due to the high possibility of the subject matter becoming an extremely heated discussion, and the probability of this story actually happening.
One only has to type "Barack Obama Assassination" into any search engine to find numerous articles on this subject. Many think that he won't even make it to his inauguration if he wins the election before falling victim to the bullet that will almost certainly claim his life.
The simple fact of the matter is this. There are people that obviously want him dead. There have stories of Senator Obama already receiving death threats from the KKK.
Many have compared Obama to President John F. Kennedy. A man loved by so many and hated by the wrong people. But how long till some unenlightened lunatic from the deep south decides that a man of darker skin pigmentation cannot run the country as well as a white man with connections to the freemasons or the mafia?
Regardless of who or what nutcase with a rifle that will likely blow the Senator's face all floor, one thing is clear. Barack Obama has the potential to be the greatest President in American history.

To quote Machiavelli: "Leaders must either be loved, or feared."
The conundrum is that when loved (i.e., by the populace), there are always those who wish to remove you from power (the elite). When feared, the populace itself often wishes to remove you from power.
That is why governments are so often subject to coups and revolutions, despite good intentions.
And to finish the Machiavelli quote, he also said that of the two it's better to be feared.
Barack has the lesser attribute going for him.

Machiavelli was referring to a principality however, not a democracy.
Very true, but one could argue the analogies present in the ruler of a democracy and the ruler of a monarchy or principality. In the case of the States though, the people don't have nearly as much power as they think.

The sad truth of the matter is that if there is an assassination attempt made on him, it will trudge up a civil war like we've never seen.

However, in a Principality the ruler is sovereign.
In a democracy the people are. In the case of the United States, the president is the head of state, but he can also lose control of congress which would undermine his sovereignty.

I'd bet on rioting as worst. The American people are too pansified, fat, and lazy to have another civil war.

The quote (and The Prince) don't concern matters of power as much as leadership. Thus, the quote applies as a fringe fanatic could easily disrupt peaceful ensuement and the proper succession of Obama (if he happens to be victorious).

Maybe a terrorist will get him and they can take away the last vestiges of freedom the American populace has. Hell, they might even demand that it happens.

Normally I would agree with you if it were talking about other types of serious demonstrations and downright warring, but racial tensions are still VERY VERY high in most places in the country.

But they're too damned lazy to organize anything that might actually make a difference or think up a solution to the problems. They're guaranteed to make matters much worse.
I do love human idiocy.

Damn Humans! Who do they think they are? :p :D
Ya, being as pessimistic as I am today, I do think that Barack Obama will probably be assassinated if he does anything like take the country out of Iraq or something else that is currently making people money.
It's quite sad that anti-war protesters get no where while pro-war people always get somewhere, probably because of the ridiculous irony that would occur if an anti-war protester killed the president.
Poor world. :(

I agree with you--things would get much worse. It wouldn't be something that helps anything--it would be a terrible terrible situation that would primarily consist of violence.
