I was wondering, does the Universal Declaration of Human Rights mean anything at all? I'm asking because according to the 2004 Amnesty International Report, the only countries that did not violate at least some human rights significantly are the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Costa Rica. I knew America violated it, execution violates Article 5, but most of the world?

Interesting, especially since the principal writer of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was a Canadian - John Humphrey. Although there have been violations, I think that it is important to have an international document that sets the guidelines. It, at the very least, sets the rules and sets the standards that allow us to point to violations when they occur. The United Nations, its committees, funds, councils, documents, etc. are far from perfect, but, in my view, are better than nothing.

Human rights go out the window when they no longer serve the interests of the strong.
